“The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy…..” -From the Second Vatican Council’s decree Sacrosanctum Concilium, para. 112

St. Mary’s Choir sings at the 9:45 Mass each Sunday, and at every feast-day liturgy. They lead the singing of the assembly, sing the portions of the Mass which change from week to week (the propers), and adorn the service with beauty by singing choral music which reflects and expands upon the Scriptures that have been read.

The choir is comprised of men and women of all ages, united by a love of music and a desire to praise God in the Church. All are volunteers. Their repertory spans the entire Western tradition of church music, beginning with Gregorian chant and continuing into the 21st century – all music that, through careful composition and deep honesty, leads the soul to Jesus in the Eucharist, has a place here.

Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Church. Visitors are always welcome – no matter their skill level or previous experience. Making music is a process of lifelong learning, and so all members of the choir journey with one another through the treasury of music, from one joyful moment to the next. And you are welcomed at any point along the way (though you may stay with the choir longer than you expect – some singers have stayed with St. Mary’s Choir for decades)!

During the summers after mid-June (Corpus Christi), there are no Wednesday evening rehearsals, and the choir simply gathers at 9:15 a.m. in Schrader Hall to prepare the psalmody and other simple liturgical music for the 9:45 a.m. Mass.

Rehearsals resume two Wednesdays before Assumption (August 15th), which in 2017 means August 2nd.
